Visas & Residency
Cyprus offers several residence routes for EU nationals, employees, business owners, remote workers and investors. We help you understand which category fits your situation and coordinate every step with a licensed immigration lawyer.
The residence categories in Cyprus
Cyprus issues residence documentation across several distinct categories, and the right one depends on your nationality, employment situation, income and how long you intend to stay. Choosing the wrong category at the outset is one of the more common causes of delay.
- EU/EEA registration certificate
- Employment-based permit
- Self-employment or business owner permit
- Digital nomad residence permit
- Permanent residency by investment (Category F)
- Family reunification for dependents
re-LOCATE reviews your situation and shortlists the categories most likely to apply, then hands the formal assessment to a licensed immigration lawyer from our network.
EU and EEA nationals
Citizens of EU and EEA member states benefit from freedom of movement, but registration is still required if you plan to stay in Cyprus beyond four months. This typically involves obtaining a registration certificate from the Civil Registry and Migration Department.
The process is generally more straightforward than non-EU routes, but still requires proof of address, income or employment, and health insurance cover. We coordinate appointment scheduling and document preparation so nothing is missed.
Employment-based residency for non-EU nationals
Non-EU nationals moving for a specific job typically need an employer-sponsored work permit, arranged with input from the Ministry of Labour and the Migration Department. Requirements include a signed employment contract, employer registration and, in some sectors, evidence that the role could not reasonably be filled locally.
Processing involves multiple government departments, and requirements can change by sector. We coordinate between your employer, our partner lawyers and the relevant authorities so responsibilities and deadlines stay clear for everyone involved.
Self-employment and business owner routes
If you are establishing or already run a Cyprus company, a residence permit can often be linked to your role as director, shareholder or self-employed professional. Requirements typically include a registered company, a credible business plan and evidence of sufficient funds to support yourself.
Because this route sits between company formation and immigration, it is one of the areas where clients most need coordination between an immigration lawyer and a corporate services provider — which is exactly what re-LOCATE manages.
The digital nomad residence permit
Cyprus offers a residence permit aimed at remote employees and self-employed professionals who work for companies or clients based outside Cyprus. It allows an extended stay without local employment, subject to proof of stable remote income and health insurance.
This category is subject to a quota set by the authorities, and availability can vary from year to year. We track published quota status where available and help you prepare a complete application to avoid unnecessary delay.
Permanent residency by investment
Category F and related investment-based routes allow qualifying applicants to obtain permanent residency, most commonly linked to a property purchase or another approved investment, combined with proof of stable annual income from abroad.
This is a longer-term, higher-commitment route with stricter financial thresholds. It does not create automatic tax residency or tax advantages — those depend on your personal circumstances and require separate advice from a licensed accountant.
Bringing family members
Spouses, registered partners and minor children can generally apply for residence alongside the main applicant, though the exact route and documentation depend on the primary category. Family applications are usually processed alongside — but not always at the same speed as — the main application.
We track dependent applications separately within your overall case, so a delay affecting one family member's paperwork is flagged early rather than discovered at the last stage.
Documents you are likely to need
Exact requirements vary by category and nationality, but most applications draw on a similar core set of documents. Your immigration lawyer will confirm the specific list for your case.
- Valid passport with sufficient remaining validity
- Proof of employment, self-employment or remote income
- Private health insurance covering Cyprus
- Clean criminal record certificate from your country of residence
- Proof of accommodation in Cyprus
- Bank statements demonstrating sufficient funds
- Certified translations and, where required, apostille certification
Realistic timelines
Processing times vary considerably by category, nationality and how complete your initial submission is. As a general guide, EU registration can often be completed within a few weeks, while employment-based and investment routes commonly take several months from first application to card collection.
Timelines below are general ranges drawn from typical cases, not commitments. Actual processing times depend on the relevant authority, application volume, nationality and how complete your documentation is.
After approval: renewals and ongoing obligations
Most residence permits are issued for a fixed period and require renewal before expiry — missing a renewal window can create complications. Some categories also carry conditions, such as minimum time spent in Cyprus or updated proof of income.
re-LOCATE keeps a renewal calendar for every client and sends reminders well ahead of deadlines, alongside your accountant and lawyer where compliance overlaps with tax or company matters.
Where coordination ends and legal advice begins
re-LOCATE is not a law firm and does not provide immigration advice. Our role is to help you understand the landscape, gather documentation, manage scheduling and keep your case on track. Your licensed immigration lawyer assesses eligibility, prepares the legal submission and represents you before the authorities.
Immigration decisions are made by Cypriot authorities, not by re-LOCATE. We coordinate the process and introduce licensed immigration lawyers who assess eligibility and prepare applications on your behalf.
